Saving Young Lives: CALM’s Mission to Prevent Youth Suicide

Calm, the mental health charity, has launched a new campaign aimed at raising awareness about youth suicide. The campaign, titled “Project84,” features 84 life-size sculptures of men standing on top of a London building to represent the 84 men who take their own lives each week in the UK. The striking visual has been created in partnership with artist Mark Jenkins and his collaborator Sandra Fernandez. The sculptures will be on display for two weeks as a way to spark conversations and challenge perceptions about suicide.

The campaign is part of Calm’s larger mission to prevent male suicide, which is currently the single biggest killer of men under the age of 45 in the UK. The charity aims to raise awareness, provide support, and break down the stigma surrounding mental health issues. Simon Gunning, CEO of Calm, explained that Project84 is a powerful way to highlight the tragic reality of suicide and the urgent need for action. He emphasized the importance of reaching out to those who may be struggling and encouraging them to seek help.

The campaign has already garnered attention and support from the public, with many people sharing their own experiences and stories of loss. Actress Sheridan Smith, who lost her father to suicide, has spoken out in support of the campaign and praised Calm for their work. She stressed the need to break the silence around mental health issues and offer support to those in need.

In addition to the sculptures, Calm has also released a short film as part of the campaign. The film features the stories of real men who have experienced suicidal thoughts and highlights the impact of their struggles on their loved ones. By sharing these personal narratives, Calm hopes to humanize the issue and show that suicide is a complex and multifaceted problem that can affect anyone.

Project84 is just one of many initiatives that Calm has undertaken to combat male suicide and promote mental wellbeing. The charity offers a helpline and webchat service for those in crisis, as well as a series of campaigns and events to raise awareness and challenge stereotypes. By engaging with the public and sparking meaningful conversations, Calm aims to change attitudes and save lives.

As the sculptures stand tall on the London skyline, they serve as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of suicide and the need for collective action. Calm’s message is clear: suicide is preventable, and no one should suffer in silence. By coming together as a community, we can support those in crisis, break down barriers, and create a more compassionate society for all. Project84 is a powerful reminder that every life is precious and that we all have a role to play in preventing suicide. Let’s stand together and take a stand against male suicide.
